Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society Incorported is committed to the open sanctuary for the long term which means that our work does not begin and end with the predator fence. We will be involved in:

  • Restoration and development of the Shakespear Open Sanctuary and areas adjoining
  • Conservation and enhancement of the natural, historic and cultural features and values of the park
  • Providing financial, material and physical support for work at the SOS and surroundings
  • Advocacy

The vision for the open sanctuary is to create an open and accessible wildlife sanctuary that integrates public recreation, conservation and farming.

The Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society was formed in 2003 to support the creation of a wildlife sanctuary within the Shakespear Regional park.

We are a group of people excited at the prospect of a sanctuary at the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula in which the community can enjoy both recreational activities and native wildlife.

We will assist the Auckland Regional Council with the restoration of the Park and advocate for the development of the open sanctuary.

We provide support to help create the open sanctuary by fund raising and undertaking voluntary work planting trees and pest control.

One of the first things we did was to reach an agreement with the Auckland Regional Council on how we can best support the establishment of an open sanctuary within the park.

One of our major endeavors is supporting a pest proof barrier that will keep out cats, possums, ferrets, rabbits, hedgehogs stoats, rats and mice out of the open sanctuary.

Membership is open to everyone who wants to support a great cause.
