welcome HAERE MAI

help us build a sanctuary for wildlife at shakespear regional park

Imagine being able to camp and walk amongst native kiwi, brown teal, bellbirds and tuatara,    or to picnic in a forest of puriri and nikau alive with bird song.

Shakespear sanctuary

The Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society has been helping Auckland Council with the creation of a wildlife sanctuary since 2003, through fundraising and bellbird voluntary work. A pest-proof fence has been built and all major pests eliminated from within the sanctuary.

Our focus now is creating an environment in which native birds and plants can thrive and absent species can be safely introduced.

The sanctuary is part of Shakespear Regional Park , located 50 minutes from Auckland City on the scenic Whangaparaoa Peninsula and offering magnificent beaches and panoramic views.
